Excellent review. Would have been nice to get the Cayman R onto a track with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires and also a GT3RS and perhaps a BMW M series for a more round comparison. A Ferrari 360 Modena would most likely be somewhat faster and perhaps corner with more agility however the price difference rules out a valid comparison. I think it is time for me to move up from my Cayman S, as much as I love it, to the new Cayman R. I’ll shoot my own video when I can.
I just had to sign in to comment on what is either the most disturbing stubble beard I’ve ever seen or the worst case of bizarro acne ever recorded. Take your fat ass double chin and shave that shit. Then please apply a good dose of cleanser, pop the motherfucking white heads, and hit the track until you weigh 170 LBS. Thanks
hmm so you can buy 3 cayman R’s or a GT3… 65 vs 185 dollars roughly. Or you can buy the cayman R and put a nice reliable turbo with around 6-8 psi boost and smoke the gt3 suckers!
Boring… Too much blah blah blah…
Sounds like a better daily driver than a GT3, and much cheaper.
@marshknute good observation, bout time Porsche stopped pissing about with the Cayman, give it 350bhp and 300 lbft of torque!
Too much stubbly double chin, too little Cayman R in this video…
Nicely done, very informative…thanks. Subscriber#3!! woooo
@CarTechnica The CarandDriver test was only about handling, and the Cayman R (on inferior tyres) pulled .1g less than the GT3. The only test where power played a factor was the squiggly handling circuit they devised. If the Cayman had the same tyres and hp, it would be better than the GT3 in every test (though probably not by too much). As for those Nurburgring times, the Cayman was only 1.2 seconds per mile slower than the GT3. Pretty impressive stuff from a car that is down 105 hp.
@marshknute The difference in tyres did make that test somewhat pointless, however, I doubt the Cayman R would have easily won even if it were running Pilot Cups. The GT3 is an astonishingly accomplished car, especially with that Metzger engine in the rear.
With the Cayman R on cups it would have been close, but on any track where the GT3 can stretch its legs, it will leave the Cayman way behind. Nordschleife times – Cayman R 7:56, GT3 7:40. Although the Cayman R time is still damn good.
@sid203 In the UK you’ll be lucky if you need air-con three or four times a year, so I’m happy to live without the weight and cost. Plus, you’re sapping power every time you use it.
That said, having driven through Nevada, Utah and New Mexico in June/July, there’s no way I’d not spec air-con if I lived over there, or anywhere else that hot
As for the radio – I’ve gotta have some tunes on my way to the track!
CarandDriver just tested the handling of the GT3 and Cayman R. The Cayman was slightly behind the GT3 in each test. While that would suggest that the rear-engined GT3 is the better handler, the Cayman R was on road tires while the GT3 was using Michelin Pilot Sport Cub tires (road legal, but as slick as the law allows). The GT3 was also aided by its 105 hp advantage in the slaloms and handling circuits. If the Cayman had the same tires and hp, it would have easily won.
All Porsches are a bit bug-like… it’s the Beetle heritage, as distant as it may be.
car reminds me of a bug for some reason
not sure why
Love Porsche…… But I need an air conditioner in my ride
screw the radio
I sing in the shower anyway
I think it is possible, see this vid: watch?v=x9gJtzUMcsk

Nope – afraid it isn’t
is launch control available in the manual gearbox?
think about it, you can get one for 60k with the options you want. the leather and interior colors you want, and whatever extras you may want also. I would probably buy some aftermarket OZ rims, instead of the porsche rims… just so i can customize my perfect look.
im so excited! I cant wait to get outta school! Its going to be hard to find a girl that wont be a golddigger if im rollin in a porsche tho.
guess ill have to get a beater car to meet them hahahh
agreed!
when i graduate, this is the car im going to buy. not lease.
